What is dental hygiene treatment?

Gum disease (gingivitis) is a very common problem and symptoms such as inflammed gums, bleeding, sensitivity, receding gums and pain on brushing can all be signs of this. It is the leading cause of tooth loss, which is why at Ruh dental we take a preventative approach to gum disease, as it is very treatable.

However, if gum disease persists over a long period of time and progresses, it can eventually affect the supporting structure of the teeth which can result in pain, infections, wobbly teeth and even tooth loss. This is known as periodontitis, a more severe form of gum disease.

At Ruh Dental our focus is on prevention and this is why we believe it is critical to visit the hygienist regularly to assist you in maintaining the health of your gums and prevent gum disease.

This is provided through regular maintenance cleaning at least twice a year, oral hygiene instruction and education.

Our hygiene appointments usually last approximately 45-60 minutes and include:

  1. Detailed discussion about your current oral hygiene regime and how it could be improved
  2. Comprehensive assessment of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth
  3. Full clean of the gums, teeth and polish using the EMS Airflow Machine, which gently but effectively removes tooth surface deposit and staining.
  4. Detailed oral hygiene instruction on how to maintain and look after your teeth tailored to your needs based on the findings of the assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I remove staining from my teeth?
Teeth can stain for a variety of reasons due to the food and drink we consume and other activities such as smoking. This can result in discoloured and yellow looking teeth. During a hygiene visit, our hygienists can remove this staining using specialised instruments which can make your teeth look whiter and provide advice on how to avoid staining on teeth.
Plaque? Tartar? Calculus? What does this all mean?
Dental plaque is the build up on the smooth part of the teeth which is soft and removable with a normal toothbrush. It is a complex mixture of food build up, skin from the mouth, saliva proteins and bacteria. Dental plaque can easily be removed with daily toothbrushing and correct flossing technique.

Tartar or calculus is similar but it is the hardened, yellow version of plaque. This is a consequence of allowing plaque to develop over a long period of time, which will require mechanical removal.

If this is allowed to persist, it can result in gum disease which is why it is important to ensure the correct toothbrushing and flossing techniques are employed in order to prevent this.
How often should I see a hygienist?
If the gums and teeth are generally quite healthy, we would advise every 6 months. However, upon advice we may recommend more regular attendance to maintain the health of your gums
I have been told I have severe gum disease, how is this treated?
Severe gum disease is usually correlated with a degree of bone loss which can cause wobbly teeth, pain and possible infections. When this is identified, it usually requires several sessions of deep cleaning which may even need to be carried out under the supervision of a gum disease specialist know as a periodontist
My parents have gum disease, does that mean I will have it?
Scientific research has identified a genetic link to gum disease which means it can be passed down from previous generations. However, it can be managed if monitored and maintained regularly
What is the EMS Airflow Machine?
It is a method called ‘Guided Biofilm Therapy’ which we deliver using a top of the range Swiss made EMS Airflow machine. It comprises the use of very fine powder particles formed with Erythritol. Together with a high pressure warm water flow this technique gently but effectively removes tooth surface deposit and staining.
