Hygiene Dental Treatment by a Dentist Near Me in London

What is Hygiene?

Oral hygiene is an important part of dental health maintenance, and the hygienist has a crucial role in helping you maintain this. At Ruh Dental, our hygienists have extensive training in spotting signs of oral disease with a focus on preventing it.

Gum disease (gingivitis) is very common and symptoms such as inflamed gums, bleeding, sensitivity, receding gums and pain on brushing can all be signs of this. It is the leading cause of tooth loss ¹ which is why at Ruh dental we take a preventative approach to gum disease, as it is very treatable.

However, if gum disease persists over a long period of time and progresses, it can eventually affect the supporting structure of the teeth which can result in pain, infections, wobbly teeth and even tooth loss. This is known as periodontitis, a more severe form of gum disease.

At Ruh Dental our focus is on prevention and this is why we believe it is critical to visit the hygienist regularly to assist you in maintaining the health of your gums and prevent gum disease.

This is provided through regular maintenance cleaning at least twice a year, oral hygiene instruction and education.

Our hygiene appointments usually last approximately 30-45 minutes and include:

  1. Detailed discussion about your current oral hygiene regime and how it could be improved
  2. Comprehensive assessment of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth
  3. Full clean of the gums, teeth and polish
  4. Detailed oral hygiene instruction on how to maintain and look after your teeth tailored to your needs based on the findings of the assessment.

Severe forms of gum disease can compromise the function and appearance of the teeth, creating the appearance of “black triangles” or that the teeth look long. Through advanced regeneration techniques, they are able to also cosmetically improve this sort of appearance and restore the normal appearance of the gums and teeth. furthermore, they are able to help reshape the gums to help and improve the appearance of a gummy smile.

This often requires the input of a gum specialist known as a periodontist who is specifically trained in the management of gum disease and the supporting structures of the teeth. They work hand in hand with the hygienist and yourself to ensure that any disease is managed.

  Symptom Checker

If you are experiencing of the symptoms below, you may need to book a Hygiene treatment.

This is nearly always a sign of gum disease, which is a very common and equally very treatable.

What to do – The best thing is to visit either the dentist for a routine check up or at the very least visit the hygienist who can give the teeth and gums a clean and provide advice on how to keep them clean.

Gum disease can cause the gums to recede to varying extents and this can cause the teeth to appear longer, more yellow, become more sensitive and give the appearance of “gappy” teeth or “black triangles”.

What to do – This can often be a sign of more developed or aggressive gum disease and you should seek urgent advice from one of our hygienists, dentists or specialist periodontist

This is a very common symptom and can be associated with gum disease, smoking and consumption of strong smelling foods.

What to do – Make an appointment with the dentist or hygienist to identify the nature of the problem and a plan can be then made to treat it accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Teeth can stain for a variety of reasons due to the food and drink we consume and other activities such as smoking. This can result in discoloured and yellow looking teeth. During a hygiene visit, our hygienists can remove this staining using specialised instruments which can make your teeth look whiter and provide advice on how to avoid staining on teeth. Furthermore, all of our hygienists have been trained in tooth whitening procedures if you are looking to generally improve the colour of them and have a whiter, more aesthetic smile.

Dental plaque is the build up on the smooth part of the teeth which is soft and removable with a normal toothbrush. It is a complex mixture of food build up, skin from the mouth, saliva proteins and millions of bacteria. They use all of the above as a food source to live off which allows them to thrive and initiate gum disease. Dental plaque can easily be removed with daily toothbrushing and correct flossing technique.

Tartar or calculus is similar but it is the hardened, yellow version of plaque. This is what develops if the plaque is allowed to persist over a period of time and harden with the salts contained in saliva. This require mechanical removal as it has hardened and will not be amenable to removal with standard toothbrushing. Common sites for this to occur are in the insides of the lower front teeth.

If plaque and tartar are allowed to persist, they can result in gum disease which is why it is important to ensure the correct toothbrushing and flossing techniques are employed in order to prevent this.
